The JPS NRF-7 general purpose audio processing unit provides a number of functions that improve the receiving conditions for radio amateurs and short wave listeners. The unit reduces or eliminates atmospheric (white/pink) noise and multiple heterodynes. A dynamic peaking filter reduces the effect of white noise outside the audio bandwidth by creating individual and constantly-varying passband filters around speech components. This reduces white noise by dynamically excluding those portions of the passband that do not contain speech. The LED tuning indicator provided is usable in all filter modes to show when the desired signal is within the filter passband and operates whether the filter is engaged or not. The unit operates on radio receiver audio outputs then provides its own clean audio from the built-in amplifier to an external 3 - 8 ohm speaker.
