M-450

Many early teletype listeners started their monitoring hobby with teletype readers. Readers have fallen out of favor in recent years because of their limited performance, limited mode coverage and lack of features. The Universal M-450v1.5 reverses this trend, providing a high quality demodulator, extensive mode coverage, state-of-the art display parallel printer port and RS232 serial port (includes control program on 3 1/2" disk). The Universal M-450v1.5 incorporates capability never seen in a reader before. The M-450 provides all the benefits of a reader, without the limitations. The M-450 is totally self contained; there is nothing else to buy. It is compact and operates from 12 VDC making it a natural for auto or boat installations. The two line liquid crystal display provides a (40) forty characters readout (not just 8 or 16 like other readers). This super-twist LCD can be read from any angle, and the front of the M-450 is sloped to provide the optimum in viewing and operating convenience. An 8000 character scrollable buffer stores incoming text for your review. LED indicators for Mark, Space, Input and Data are provided. A gray, all metal cabinet provides a solid look of quality. The rear panel has Audio Input, Discriminator Input, Parallel Printer Port, RS-232 Serial Port and 11-15 VDC input. For the shortwave listener, the M-450 provides all the standard reception modes ... and then some. The M-450 is the affordable accessory for every shortwave listener!

SHORTWAVE MODES

  • Baudot, the original RTTY mode, can be copied in all five speeds (45, 50, 57, 75 and 100 baud). Baudot is used by some press agencies (formerly), ham radio operators and weather stations.
  • SITOR is a popular teletype modes on shortwave. SITOR is used for communications between ships and coastal stations plus ham radio operators.
  • NAVTEX Navigational Telex is the transmission of navigational and weather information on 518 kHz. (NAVTEX is a variant of SITOR.). Click here for NAVTEX information.
  • FEC-A is a press-diplo. mode gaining wide acceptance primarily in Europe.
  • ASCII at 75, 110 and 150 baud.
  • SWED-ARQ This Swedish mode can be copied in the U.S.A. during the day.
  • FAX - That's right; with a graphics compatible parallel printer attached, you can copy FAX from shortwave. You can print weather maps and charts from around the world. The printer is optional. (FAX decoding is at 120 LPM, 576 IOC).

The M-450's shortwave capability is only half the story. The scanner enthusiast will also enjoy the M-450.

VHF-UHF MODES

  • ACARS Stands for Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System. This aviation teletype mode is in wide use at most major commercial airports. Extensive traffic can be copied from both nearby commercial airports and aircraft. Click here for ACARS information.
  • DTMF decoding of all 16 DTMF digits.
  • CTCSS (PL) frequency decoding is also available. Read all 41 standard tones.
  • DCS (Digital Coded Squelch, also referred to as Digital Private Line) all 104 standard codes.

The M-450 has several functions that you can program. With the use of an optional speaker, the M-450 can be programmed to pass only the audio you want to hear! You can set the M-450 to only activate the speaker when it receives a CTCSS, DCS or DTMF code of your choosing. The M-450 comes with an instructive Owner's Manual and 12 VDC 300 mA wall adapter. Please note that the M-450v1.5 does not support pager modes.

The self-contained M-450 does not require a computer for normal operation. However a standard DB-9F serial port is featured if use with a PC is desired. A free control program called PC450 is included with your M-450. Click here for PC450 information.
